Mouth lesions, such as small ulcers or fluid-filled blisters in the mouth, may appear and make the animal reluctant to eat. Discharge from the nose or eyes is sometimes present. In more severe cases, infection can affect the respiratory tract, causing breathing difficulty. The animal may also lose weight gradually if the disease becomes chronic or recurrent.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by a herpesvirus, an agent known for establishing latent infections: after initial infection, the virus remains hidden in the body and can reactivate during periods of stress or weakened immune defenses. In lemurs, several types of herpesvirus have been identified, some capable of spreading between closely related species during close contact in captivity.

Indris held in captivity, where stress from environmental change is significant, appear at greater risk of developing clinical signs. Cohabitation with other lemur species that carry the virus, an immune system weakened by malnutrition or other diseases, and stressful transport or handling conditions are contributing factors.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through direct contact with infected secretions (saliva, nasal or eye discharge). Sharing of space, food, or contaminated objects between animals can also promote spread, particularly in captive environments where contact is close.

Possible complications include dehydration or malnutrition secondary to difficulty eating, worsening respiratory involvement, or secondary bacterial infections on skin and mucous membrane lesions. In an already fragile animal, the disease may contribute to a general decline in health.
