Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a herpesvirus, most often similar to human herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), sometimes other primate herpesviruses. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with active lesions, saliva, or contaminated secretions.
Young orangutans are particularly at risk, especially hand-reared infants or those with frequent contact with humans. Stress, weakened immunity, concurrent illness, or close quarters in captivity with staff increase the risk of transmission and severe disease.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through close contact with a person or animal carrying the virus, especially when active lesions are present (cold sore in humans).
