Ichthyophthiosis, commonly called white spot disease, is a parasitic infestation very common in freshwater fish, including roach. It is caused by a single-celled ciliate parasite, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, which settles in the skin, fins, and gills of the fish. This disease is one of the most common causes of death in freshwater fish kept in ponds or tanks, particularly during temperature fluctuations or times of stress. It may affect a single fish, but spreads very rapidly to an entire pond or tank if left untreated.

The most characteristic sign is the appearance of numerous tiny white spots, resembling grains of salt, on the skin, fins, and sometimes gills of the roach.

The infected fish often rubs against the tank walls, plants, or substrate, as if trying to scratch itself. This is called flashing.

Abnormal swimming may be observed, jerky or conversely lethargic, rapid breathing if the gills are affected, loss of appetite, and the fish remaining still or isolated.

In advanced cases, the fins may appear damaged or ragged, and the skin may look dull or irritated.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by a ciliate parasite, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, which has a complex life cycle. The adult parasite (trophozoite) burrows into the fish's skin and gills where it feeds and forms the visible white spots. Once mature, it leaves the fish, sinks to the bottom, forms a protective cyst, and reproduces by producing many free-swimming forms (theronts) that seek out a new host to infect. This rapid cycle explains the explosive spread of the disease in a pond or tank.

Stress is the main factor that promotes the onset and severity of the disease: transport, sudden changes in water temperature, poor water quality, overstocking in the pond or tank, or recent handling of the fish.

Rapid temperature fluctuations, especially in spring and autumn, encourage parasite multiplication. Young fish and fish already weakened by another disease are more vulnerable.

Transmission

The parasite is transmitted directly in the water from fish to fish through free-swimming forms (theronts) that actively seek a host. Direct contact between fish is not necessary. Introduction of a new fish carrying the parasite, contaminated equipment (nets, buckets, water), or aquatic plants from an infested pond can be enough to introduce the disease into clean water.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

A veterinarian or fish pathology specialist diagnoses the condition by observing the characteristic white spots with the naked eye, supplemented if necessary by microscopic examination of a sample of skin mucus or gill tissue, which allows visualization of the typical ciliated parasite and confirms the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment relies on antiparasitic products suitable for freshwater fish, administered directly into the pond or tank water, because the free-living forms of the parasite that are most vulnerable to treatment are found in the water. A controlled and gradual increase in water temperature may also be used to speed up the parasite's life cycle and improve treatment effectiveness. The choice of product and duration of treatment must be determined by a veterinarian or specialist, as the encysted forms of the parasite in the fish's skin are not reached by treatments and several applications spaced over time are often necessary.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention depends above all on good water quality management and reducing stress in fish: avoid overstocking, maintain effective filtration and stable temperature.

Any new fish added to a pond or tank should be quarantined for several weeks before joining the others, to detect any infestation before it spreads.

Equipment (nets, dip nets) used in an infested pond should not be reused without disinfection in another pond.

Possible complications

Severe untreated infestation can severely damage the gills, causing major breathing difficulties. Open skin lesions also create an opportunity for secondary bacterial or fungal infections. In severe cases, mortality can affect much or all of the fish in the same pond or tank within a few days.

Prognosis

The outlook is good if the disease is caught early and treated promptly, with proper water quality management. However, if treatment is delayed or the infestation is heavy, the outlook becomes guarded, as the parasite multiplies rapidly and can wipe out an entire fish population in a short time.

Do white spots disappear on their own?

Rarely. Without proper water treatment, the parasite continues its life cycle and multiplies, worsening the infestation rather than disappearing on its own.

Does treating a single fish suffice to treat the entire pond?
