Salmonella infection is a bacterial disease affecting the digestive tract of the North African hedgehog. This bacterium naturally inhabits the intestines of many animals, including some hedgehogs that appear perfectly healthy and may carry it without becoming ill. In other animals, it causes inflammation of the intestine ranging from mild to severe. This disease is particularly significant because it can transmit to humans, making it a public health concern as well as a veterinary problem.

Infected hedgehogs may show no visible signs, making the disease difficult to detect without testing. When symptoms do appear, diarrhea—sometimes watery—is most commonly observed, along with lethargy and loss of appetite. Vomiting may occur. In more severe cases, blood may appear in the feces and the animal dehydrates rapidly, which is dangerous given its small size. Mild fever and a swollen or tender abdomen are also possible. In young animals or those already weakened, infection can progress quickly to a serious condition.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by bacteria of the Salmonella genus, of which many strains exist. Some circulate naturally in hedgehogs without necessarily making them ill, with the animal remaining a healthy carrier able to shed the bacterium in its feces intermittently.
Stress, poor or damp housing, improper diet, and living in close contact with other animals can trigger clinical signs in carriers. Young hedgehogs, elderly animals, or those already weakened by another disease are more likely to develop severe infection. New arrivals in a group or animals recently exposed to stress (transport, change of environment) face increased risk.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the fecal-oral route: the hedgehog becomes infected by ingesting food, water, or bedding contaminated with feces containing the bacteria. The bacterium can also survive for some time in the environment (cage, substrate, food bowls). Transmission to humans occurs through direct contact with the animal, its feces, or contaminated surfaces, particularly if hand hygiene is inadequate after handling.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on observed clinical signs and fecal culture analysis to isolate and identify the bacterium. Additional tests, such as a blood sample, may help assess the animal's overall condition and detect dehydration or inflammation.
Treatment
Management involves appropriate fluid replacement and nutritional support, combined with antibiotic treatment if needed, selected by the veterinarian based on test results. Routine antibiotic use is not always recommended in healthy carriers without clinical signs, as it may promote bacterial resistance.

Prevention
Thorough cleaning of the enclosure, food bowls, and bedding significantly reduces contamination risk. Quarantining any new animal before introducing it to an established group is a useful precaution. A clean, dry environment with minimal stress reduces the likelihood that a healthy carrier will develop active disease.

Severe dehydration can develop rapidly in hedgehogs due to their small size. In severe cases, the bacterium may enter the bloodstream (septicemia) and affect other organs, which is life-threatening.
