Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease affecting sea anemones kept in marine aquariums. It is caused by opportunistic bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater, that take advantage of an animal's weakened state to multiply. This infection causes progressive tissue breakdown in the anemone and can lead to death if left untreated. It occurs in both anemones in home reef aquariums and those maintained in public facilities.

Early signs are often subtle: the anemone retracts abnormally, closes its tentacles, and remains contracted longer than usual. Its color may become paler or dull, and the protective mucus coating its body may appear excessive or be absent in patches.

As the disease progresses, areas of tissue detach or disintegrate, giving the column or tentacles a frayed or "melted" appearance. An unusual odor may emanate from the water around the affected animal.

In advanced cases, the foot anchoring the anemone to the substrate detaches, the animal may drift freely in the tank, a sign of severe and often irreversible damage.

Causes and risk factors

The infection is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, naturally present in seawater, including in well-maintained aquariums. These bacteria become pathogenic when the anemone is weakened or stressed: poor water quality, excessively high temperature, sudden changes in salinity, or insufficient food reduce its natural defenses. The bacteria then exploit even minor tissue damage (contact with coral, handling, injury) to establish and multiply, causing progressive tissue degradation.

Sea anemones at highest risk are those kept in newly established tanks with insufficient or unstable filtration. Excessively warm water, rapid fluctuations in salinity, tank overstocking, and inadequate nutrition increase the likelihood of infection. Physical handling (moving, capturing) or injuries from contact with other invertebrates also raise risk by creating entry points for bacteria.

Transmission

The bacterium is naturally present in seawater and does not transmit directly from one animal to another as a typical contagious disease. The risk is mainly linked to declining overall water quality in the tank, which can favor the appearance of infection in several weakened organisms simultaneously.

Avoiding unnecessary stress to the anemone is advised, including frequent handling, relocation, and aggressive contact with other tank organisms.

New anemones should undergo a quarantine period before introduction into an established tank.

Consistent, appropriate feeding helps maintain strong natural defenses in the animal.

Possible complications

Without improvement in tank conditions, the infection may develop into complete tissue necrosis within days. Decomposition of a dead anemone in the tank releases toxins and bacteria that can contaminate the water and threaten other inhabitants (fish, corals, invertebrates). A sharp decline in water quality (ammonia spike) is common after the animal dies if it is not removed promptly.
