It is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, germs naturally present in seawater. These bacteria become problematic when the animal is weakened, injured, or under significant stress—for example during transport or sudden changes in water conditions. The nautilus, a cephalopod mollusk with an external shell, is particularly sensitive to stress and environmental changes, making it vulnerable to this type of opportunistic infection.
This disease remains poorly documented scientifically because the nautilus is an uncommon species in captivity, found mainly in a few public aquariums and research facilities.

The signs observed are often subtle at first. The animal may become less active, remain withdrawn in its shell longer than usual, or swim erratically. Loss of appetite is common.
