Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease that affects many marine fish, including sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus). It is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, naturally present in seawater. These bacteria become problematic especially when the fish is weakened or injured, for example after capture, transport or significant stress. In wild fish such as sailfish, this infection is mainly documented in captivity (aquariums, research tanks) or after handling during sport fishing.

The signs are not always easy to spot in a fish living in the wild. In captivity or during close observation, we may notice abnormal or slowed swimming, a fish that remains on the surface or near the bottom for no apparent reason, a loss of appetite. The skin may have redness, sores or ulcers that do not heal, sometimes accompanied by localized swelling. The eyes may become cloudy or opaque. In more advanced forms, a yellowish discoloration (jaundice) of the tissues may appear, as well as a general state of fatigue in the fish.

Causes and risk factors
Several Vibrio species may be involved, including Vibrio anguillarum, Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, among others. These bacteria are part of the normal flora of seawater and become pathogenic opportunistically. They benefit from an entry point into the body: an injury due to a hook, a net, a shock during capture, or simply a drop in the fish's immune defenses linked to stress.
Stress related to capture, transport or handling is the main risk factor in sailfish, a species particularly sensitive to stress due to its pelagic lifestyle and high swimming speed. Poor water quality, high water temperature, pre-existing injury or pool overcrowding also promote infection. Fish caught and released (catch-and-release sport fishing) are particularly exposed if handling is prolonged or brutal.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is difficult in the natural environment and mainly concerns fish kept in captivity or studied closely. A veterinarian specializing in aquatic animals can take a sample from skin lesions, blood or internal organs to perform a bacterial culture and identify the Vibrio species in question. An antibiogram then helps guide the therapeutic choice.
Treatment
Treatment is based on appropriate antibiotics, ideally chosen after antibiogram, combined with supportive care to reduce stress and improve water quality. Cleaning wounds and improving environmental conditions are an integral part of care. No treatment should be applied without advice from a qualified fish pathology professional.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is primarily based on limiting stress and injuries. When catching and releasing, it is recommended to handle the fish for as short a time as possible, avoid contact with dry or abrasive surfaces, and return it to the water quickly. In captivity (research or exhibition structures), good water quality, a stable temperature and an appropriate fish density limit the appearance of the disease.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can progress to generalized septicemia, which is often fatal in fish. Skin lesions can spread and become more infected, allowing the entry of other pathogens. In humans handling infected fish, contamination of a skin wound is possible.

Transmission to humans
Certain species of Vibrio, notably Vibrio vulnificus, can infect humans through a skin wound in contact with contaminated seawater or with infected fish. This infection can be serious, especially in people who are immunocompromised or have liver disease. It is recommended to wear gloves when handling suspect fish and to thoroughly disinfect any wounds that have been in contact with seawater or fish.
Prognosis
The prognosis depends on the precocity of treatment and the species of Vibrio involved. A localized infection treated quickly can progress favorably. Generalized sepsis greatly worsens the prognosis, with a high risk of mortality, particularly in a pelagic species sensitive to stress such as the sailfish.
