Presentation
The Sailboat (Istiophorus platypterus) is a large predatory marine fish recognizable by its sail-shaped dorsal fin extended almost the entire length of its back. It frequents the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. This fast hunter feeds mainly on pelagic fish and cephalopods which it stalks in open water. The Sailboat is considered one of the fastest fish in the world, capable of reaching high speeds over short distances. It is very popular for sport fishing because of its combativeness once hooked.
The body of the Sailboat is elongated, spindle-shaped and covered with small scales, suitable for fast swimming. Its dorsal, called “sail”, is bright blue in color and can be deployed or folded down as needed. Its bill is long and pointed, similar to that of the marlin, and its coat has a blue-gray back which becomes lighter on the belly.
Characteristics
Indicative values: they vary by subspecies, sex and region.
Habitat and distribution
The Sailboat lives in tropical and subtropical surface waters, generally above 200 meters depth. It frequents both the open sea and coastal areas, particularly during its seasonal migrations. It appreciates waters at high temperatures, around 21 to 28°C.
CURRENT RANGE
The species is present in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, in tropical and subtropical zones. In the Mediterranean, its presence remains rare and occasional, linked to the entry of individuals from the Atlantic. It is not considered regular in Tunisian waters.
Behaviour
The Sailboat is a fast and active swimmer, often observed on the surface near the coast or in the open sea. It can move alone or in small groups, especially during cooperative hunting. Its territorial behavior is limited, the species being rather migratory, following warm currents and areas rich in prey.
Reproduction
Sailboat reproduction takes place in warm waters, generally during the summer season. Females lay large numbers of pelagic eggs which are fertilized in open water. The larvae and juveniles develop quickly, taking advantage of the rich plankton in the spawning areas.
Peculiarities
The most striking feature of the Sailboat is its disproportionate dorsal fin, which it can hoist like a sail to intimidate its prey or communicate with its conspecifics. This characteristic gives it its common name in many languages.
Threats and conservation
The Sailboat is exploited by commercial and sport fishing, which exerts moderate pressure on its populations. It can also be caught accidentally as bycatch in nets intended for other pelagic species. Its wide distribution and high reproduction rate, however, limit the risks of global population collapse.
