It is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, naturally present in sea water.\n\nThese bacteria become problematic, especially when the fish is weakened, stressed or injured. In swordfish, this infection is mainly documented in animals kept in captivity, in tanks or during transport after capture, because this species tolerates confinement very poorly.\n\nIn nature, the infection also exists but it is more difficult to observe and document, swordfish being a large oceanic pelagic.
