Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease that affects many marine fish, including swordfish. It is caused by bacteria of the Vibrio genus, naturally present in sea water.\n\nThese bacteria become problematic, especially when the fish is weakened, stressed or injured. In swordfish, this infection is mainly documented in animals kept in captivity, in tanks or during transport after capture, because this species tolerates confinement very poorly.\n\nIn nature, the infection also exists but it is more difficult to observe and document, swordfish being a large oceanic pelagic.

The signs are often not specific at first: the animal swims abnormally, seems tired, stays on the surface or near the bottom, and reduces its food intake.\n\nSkin lesions may appear: redness, wounds that do not heal, swollen or necrotic areas (tissues that die and change color). In certain fish, a yellowish tint to the tissues (jaundice) can be observed if the liver is affected.\n\nIn severe forms, septicemia (generalized infection passing into the blood) can set in, leading to rapid death, sometimes without very marked external signs.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, a group very common in warm marine and estuarine waters. Several species of this genus may be involved depending on the region and conditions.\n\nThese bacteria are most often opportunists: they take advantage of a reduction in the fish's defenses to proliferate, rather than attacking a perfectly healthy animal.
Stress is the main risk factor: capture, handling, transport, sudden change in temperature or salinity of the water.\n\nSkin injuries (net, hook, impact against a pool wall) open an entry point for bacteria. Poor water quality, overdensity in the tank or high water temperature also favor the multiplication of Vibrio.\n\nSwordfish, an oceanic species accustomed to large spaces, is particularly sensitive to captivity stress, which makes it a species at increased risk for this type of infection outside its natural environment.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water, via skin wounds or gills. There is no documented direct transmission from fish to fish outside of the shared aquatic environment.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based on the examination of the fish by a veterinarian or a specialist in fish pathology, associated with samples (skin lesions, blood, organs) sent to the laboratory for bacterial culture and identification of the Vibrio species in question.\n\nAdditional analyzes (antibiogram) help guide the choice of the most suitable treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is based on antibiotic therapy adapted to the identified bacteria, prescribed exclusively by a veterinarian or specialist. Supportive care (improvement of water quality, reduction of stress) accompanies medical treatment.\n\nTreatment of skin lesions may also be necessary depending on their severity.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is mainly based on limiting stress and injuries: gentle and rapid handling during capture or transport, monitored water quality, stable temperature and salinity.\n\nIn the context of breeding or transit basins, good management of animal density and rigorous hygiene of facilities reduce the ambient bacterial load.\n\nThere is no vaccine available for this species against Vibrio infections.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can progress to generalized sepsis, which is often fatal. Extensive skin lesions can also promote other secondary infections.
