This infection is well known in marine aquarium keeping and in invertebrate farming, where it can appear rapidly when water conditions deteriorate. It affects both wild starfish and those kept in pools or public aquariums.

The first signs are often subtle. Discolored or whitish patches appear on the starfish's arms, sometimes accompanied by localized swelling. The skin may appear damaged or crumble in places, revealing lesions that do not heal. In more advanced cases, one or several arms may necrose—the tissues die and gradually detach—a phenomenon sometimes called "wasting syndrome" or "starfish wasting disease." The animal becomes less active, moves little, and may stop eating. In severe forms, the starfish can disintegrate within a few days.

The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio, in particular certain opportunistic marine species. These bacteria are normally present in the marine environment without causing problems. Poor water quality—elevated temperature, insufficient oxygen, excess organic matter—strongly favors disease development. Rapid fluctuations in water temperature, observed especially during marine heatwaves, have been associated with mass mortality events in wild starfish populations.
