The horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) is an ancient marine animal, sometimes called a "horseshoe crab" though it is not a true crab. Its body is protected by a hard shell called an exoskeleton.
Bacterial skin infection affects this shell and the soft tissues beneath it. It shows up as spots, erosions, or holes in the shell. This disease is sometimes called shell disease or spotted carapace disease.
It is well documented in other crustaceans and marine arthropods, and similar cases have been reported in horseshoe crabs, particularly in captivity or in polluted environments.

Early signs are often subtle. Dark, brown, or black patches may appear on the shell, resembling burnt or eroded areas.
Over time, these patches can enlarge and form small holes or deeper erosions in the exoskeleton. The shell may look rough or uneven in places.
The affected animal may become less active, less responsive, and refuse to feed normally. In advanced cases, the infection can spread to the soft tissues under the shell, causing local swelling or a wound that does not heal.
A severely weakened animal often remains motionless at the bottom of the tank or its habitat.

Diagnosis begins with careful examination of the shell by a professional experienced with marine invertebrates (aquarist or veterinarian specializing in exotic/aquatic species).
Samples from the affected areas can be analyzed in a laboratory to identify the bacteria involved and guide treatment.
Assessment of the water quality in the animal's environment is also part of the diagnostic approach, as it is often linked to the underlying cause of the problem.
Treatment
Management first and foremost focuses on immediate improvement of water quality.
Depending on severity, a local antibacterial treatment or bath therapy may be considered by a specialized professional, tailored to marine invertebrates.
General support of the animal (isolation, stress reduction, appropriate feeding) is an integral part of management.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Maintaining excellent water quality is the most important measure: efficient filtration, regular water changes, and monitoring of temperature and salinity.
Overcrowding in tanks must be avoided, and animals should be handled carefully to prevent damage to their shells.
