The remora is a marine fish known for its adhesive disc located on top of its head, which allows it to attach to hosts such as sharks, sea turtles, or large fish. In captivity or during handling, its skin can become injured, creating an opening for bacteria naturally present in seawater. Bacterial skin infection is an inflammation of the skin caused by the multiplication of these bacteria in a wound or weakened area. It is a common problem in fish kept in aquariums or tanks, especially when water quality is not optimal.

Owners or caretakers may notice red or discoloured patches on the remora's skin, sometimes accompanied by small wounds or ulcers that do not heal normally.
The fish may display white or cloudy deposits in localized areas, less active swimming, or conversely rubbing movements against the aquarium walls or décor, a sign of discomfort or itching.
In more advanced cases, general lethargy is observed, along with loss of appetite, and sometimes disorganized or surface swimming, indicating deeper tissue involvement or associated difficulty breathing.

Causes and risk factors
Infection is usually caused by opportunistic bacteria naturally present in the marine environment, such as certain species of Vibrio, Aeromonas, or Pseudomonas. These bacteria take advantage of a skin wound, stress, or weakened immune defences in the fish to multiply and cause localized or widespread inflammation.
Injuries from handling, transport, or rubbing against the adhesive disc of another individual promote bacterial entry.
Poor water quality (high ammonia or nitrite levels, or unsuitable temperature) weakens the fish's skin and immune system.
Stress from insufficient living space, lack of a suitable host to attach to, or unsuitable tank mates with other species also increases risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in aquatic animals performs a visual examination of the skin lesions and assesses the fish's overall condition. A mucus or skin tissue sample may be taken for bacterial culture to identify the causative bacterium, allowing for targeted treatment selection.
Treatment
Treatment relies on appropriate antibiotics, administered either in the water or orally through food, depending on the case. Local care and immediate improvement of water quality routinely accompany drug treatment.

Prevention
Maintaining excellent water quality with stable parameters suited to the species is the most important preventive measure.
Handling the remora carefully and avoiding prolonged contact with bare hands or rough surfaces limits the risk of skin injury.
Providing an enriched environment with a suitable substrate or substitute host that the fish can attach to reduces stress and risky behaviors.

Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper into the tissues, reach the muscles or internal organs, and lead to septicemia that may prove fatal for the fish.
