The remora is a marine fish known for living attached to larger marine animals (sharks, rays, sea turtles) thanks to an adhesive disc on its head. Like many fish, it can become infested with small parasitic crustaceans called copepods, as well as other related external parasitic crustaceans (particularly isopods). These parasites attach to the skin, fins, or gills of the remora and feed on its blood, mucus, or tissues. This condition primarily affects remoras kept in captivity, in public aquariums or research tanks, where crowded conditions promote parasite transmission.

Small dots or filaments are often visible on the skin surface, on the fins, or near the gills—these are the parasites themselves, sometimes difficult to spot without magnification. The skin around the attachment points may become red, irritated, or slightly swollen. The infested fish rubs against the tank walls, floor, or decorations to try to remove the parasites, which can further damage its skin and fins. The fish may also display less fluid swimming, remain still longer than usual, lose appetite, and show signs of weakening. In more severe cases, damaged skin patches or frayed fins appear.

Causes and risk factors
Parasitic copepods and certain related crustaceans (such as isopods) are small aquatic organisms that, at a stage of their life cycle, must find a fish host to attach to and feed on. They grip firmly to the skin, fins, or gills using hooks or specialized mouthparts. Once attached, they draw blood or mucus, which progressively irritates and weakens the host fish.
Captive conditions in tanks or aquariums increase transmission risk because fish are in close contact and parasites readily spread from one individual to another. Poor water quality, inadequate tank maintenance, stress from transport or living with other species, and a weakened immune system from other illnesses all raise the risk of infestation. Introducing new fish without quarantine is a common way these parasites establish themselves in a previously healthy tank.
Transmission
Transmission occurs in the water, usually through direct contact between fish or by free-living larval stages of parasites present in the tank, which attach to a new host.

Quarantining all new fish before adding them to a community tank is the best way to prevent parasites.
