This disease affects both wild tench and those raised in ponds or reservoirs.

Early signs are often subtle: the fish becomes less active and keeps to itself away from others. Red patches then appear on the body, which may progress to open sores or ulcers. The skin may appear damaged in places, with loss of scales. The fins may appear ragged or frayed at the edges. Some tench rub against objects in the pond, as if seeking relief from itching. In advanced cases, the fish swims abnormally, stays near the surface or bottom, and refuses to eat.

Causes and risk factors
Several bacteria naturally present in freshwater can be responsible, notably germs from the Aeromonas or Pseudomonas groups. These are opportunistic bacteria: they normally live in the environment without causing problems, but take advantage of weakness in the fish or a skin wound to establish themselves and multiply.
Poor water quality is the main risk factor: water overloaded with organic matter, insufficient oxygen levels, or sudden temperature swings. Stress from transport, handling, or overcrowding weakens the fish's natural defenses. A pre-existing wound from netting, another fish, or tank debris creates an entry point for infection. Tench already weakened by another disease or parasites are also more vulnerable.

Transmission occurs through water, from one fish to another, especially when fish density in the pond is high. Contact with contaminated material or water between different ponds can also promote spread.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A fish veterinarian examines the appearance of skin lesions and the fish's overall condition. A skin or lesion sample may be taken to identify the bacterium involved and rule out parasites or fungal infection. Water quality assessment of the tank is an integral part of the evaluation, as it often points to the underlying cause.
Treatment
Treatment may include an antibiotic suited to the identified bacterium, prescribed and dosed only by a veterinarian. Local skin care and immediate improvement in water quality usually accompany treatment. In some cases, a medicated bath may be recommended by the veterinarian.
