Early signs are often reddened or discolored patches on the body, which progress to small sores or ulcers. These lesions may weep, enlarge, or develop a whitish or grayish coating. The fins may appear frayed or eroded at the edges. The affected fish often swims abnormally, stays near the surface, or rubs against the tank walls or decor as if trying to relieve itching. The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria—that is, germs normally present in the aquatic environment that become problematic only when the fish's natural defenses are weakened. These organisms enter through a break in the skin: handling injury, bite from a tank mate, rubbing against a rough surface, or damage caused by an external parasite.
Poor water quality is the main risk factor: water overloaded with organic matter, insufficient oxygen levels, and unsuitable temperature or pH. Overcrowding of fish in the tank increases stress and the risk of injuries between individuals. Stress from transport, handling, or sudden environmental changes weakens the fish's immune defences. The presence of external parasites or pre-existing wounds provides a gateway for bacteria.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through the environment: bacteria present in the water colonize the skin of fish whose defenses are compromised. Direct contact between injured fish or shared contaminated water can promote spread within the same tank.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian specialising in fish farming or aquatic animals first examines the appearance of skin lesions and the fish's general condition. They enquire about the tank's water parameters, stocking density, and recent events (transport, handling, introduction of new individuals). In some cases, a skin biopsy or further tests are necessary to rule out other causes such as parasites or fungal infection.
Treatment
Treatment relies on immediate improvement of water quality and stress reduction, without which no medication will be fully effective. Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper and reach muscles or internal organs, leading to potentially fatal generalised septicaemia. Untreated ulcers may enlarge and make the fish vulnerable to secondary infections, particularly fungal ones. Significant mortality can occur in the tank if farming conditions are not corrected, as the disease can affect multiple individuals at once.
