Bacterial skin infection in oystercatchers is a skin condition caused by abnormal multiplication of bacteria, usually following a wound or local irritation. These wading birds live near wetlands, mudflats, and coastal areas where they are exposed to germs present in water, mud, and sand. In wild or captive oystercatchers (rehabilitation centres, bird reserves, aviary facilities), this infection remains uncommon but can complicate an existing wound, puncture, an ill-fitting leg band, or contact with a contaminated environment. It affects mainly the legs, the base of the beak, and areas of bare skin less protected by feathers.

There is redness and swelling of the skin, sometimes warm to the touch. Crusts or small oozing wounds may appear, sometimes with an unpleasant odour if the infection progresses. The bird may repeatedly peck or scratch at the affected area. In more advanced cases, lameness appears if the legs are involved, with difficulty perching or walking on rocks and sand. The bird may seem less active and less vigorous in foraging, and may lose appetite if pain or general discomfort sets in. A wound that does not heal despite several days is an important warning sign.

Causes and risk factors

The infection is caused by opportunistic bacteria, often those naturally present on the bird's skin or in its environment (stagnant water, mud, contaminated sand), which take advantage of a break in the skin to multiply. An initial wound — scratch, cut from a sharp shell, friction from a poorly fitted scientific tracking band, bite from another animal — is almost always the starting point.

Predisposing factors include a highly polluted or organic matter-rich environment, an untreated pre-existing wound, a weakened immune system from stress, hunger, another illness, or harsh winter conditions, as well as prolonged captivity in insufficient hygiene conditions. Repeated contact with sharp surfaces such as shell debris also increases the risk of initial wounds.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian or trained caregiver examines the lesion visually, assesses its extent and depth, and may take a sample to identify the bacterium responsible and guide treatment selection. A general examination of the bird also allows checking for deeper tissue involvement or impact on overall condition.

Treatment

Treatment consists of cleaning and disinfecting the wound locally, combined if necessary with antibiotics appropriate to the identified bacterium, prescribed by a veterinarian only. A protective dressing may be applied during healing. Supporting the bird's general health through rest and proper nutrition aids recovery.

Prevention

Prevention relies on maintaining a clean environment for birds in care facilities or in captivity, with water and ground surfaces regularly cleaned. Any wound, however minor, should be monitored and disinfected promptly. Tracking devices such as leg bands must be properly fitted to prevent rubbing. In the wild, preserving the quality of mudflats and tidal zones limits exposure to environmental pathogens.

Possible complications

Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper into tissues and potentially reach the subcutaneous layers or joints if a leg is affected, leading to lasting lameness. Generalized infection is possible in a weakened bird, which may be life-threatening.

A wound that does not heal after several days. A skin area that is red, swollen, or warm, especially on a leg. A bird that limps, refuses to perch or walk normally. Lethargy, loss of appetite, or reduced activity compared to usual behaviour. Discharge or unusual odour from a skin lesion.

Prognosis is generally good if the infection is managed early and remains localized. It becomes more guarded in cases of deep or joint involvement, or if the bird is already compromised by other factors.
