Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in wild shorebirds such as oystercatchers. These worms live in the bird's intestines or stomach and feed at its expense. A light parasite burden often goes unnoticed, but a heavy infestation can seriously weaken the bird, especially in young or already compromised individuals.

Signs are often subtle and non-specific. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite preserved appetite, dull and unkempt plumage, reduced activity and alertness, and sometimes diarrhea or abnormal droppings. In young birds, growth retardation and general weakness are possible. In severe cases, worms may be visible in the droppings or regurgitated. A heavily infested bird becomes lethargic, stays apart from the group, and may die if the infestation is not managed.

Causes and risk factors
Infestation is caused by gastrointestinal nematodes, a group of roundworms specific to wild birds, particularly shorebirds frequenting mudflats and coastal zones. Oystercatchers become infested by ingesting larvae present in their environment (sediments, marine invertebrates, contaminated water) or by consuming prey (mollusks, marine worms) that harbor larval stages of the parasite. The life cycle of these parasites often depends on environmental moisture and the presence of intermediate invertebrate hosts.
Young birds, weakened, malnourished, or stressed individuals (injury, captivity, wildlife care centers) are more susceptible. A high density of birds at a site (roosting area, feeding zone) promotes environmental contamination. Heavily frequented coastal wetlands and periods of migratory or breeding stress also increase the risk of significant infestation.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is based on clinical examination of the bird and particularly on faecal analysis (coproscopic examination) under the microscope to detect parasite eggs. In some cases, post-mortem examination or endoscopy may reveal adult parasites. The veterinarian also assesses the bird's general condition, weight, and hydration status before deciding on treatment.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering antiparasitic drugs (dewormers) under veterinary supervision, adapted to the species and the bird's condition. Nutritional support and fluid therapy may be needed in addition for weakened birds. Care is typically provided at a wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Prevention
In the wild, prevention relies mainly on preserving coastal habitat quality and limiting overpopulation at feeding sites. In captivity or wildlife care facilities, good aviary hygiene, regular cleaning of floors and water, and appropriate nutrition reduce risk. Regular veterinary monitoring with fecal examination allows detection of infestation before clinical signs appear.
Possible complications
Severe, untreated infestation can lead to intestinal obstruction or perforation, anaemia, severe dehydration, and general weakness that leaves the bird prone to secondary infections. In young birds, it can permanently compromise growth and survival.
