Early signs are often subtle: the piranha becomes less active, separates from the group, or remains motionless in a corner of the tank.

Fins may appear frayed, edges eroded, or show reddish patches at their base.

The fish may rub against decorations or the substrate as if seeking relief from skin irritation.

Causes and risk factors

Several genera of opportunistic bacteria naturally present in freshwater can be responsible, notably Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or Flavobacterium species. These microorganisms exploit a weakness in the fish's skin barrier (wound, stress, damaged mucus layer) to multiply and cause localized or more widespread infection.

Poor water quality—high ammonia or nitrite levels, or insufficient water changes—is the primary risk factor.

Stress from overcrowding, fighting between fish (common in group-housed piranhas), transport, or handling also promotes disease onset.

Skin wounds, unsuitable water temperature, or sudden shifts in water parameters (pH, temperature) weaken the fish's natural defenses.

An unbalanced or inadequate diet may also reduce the animal's overall resistance.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly through contaminated water and direct contact between fish in the same tank, especially when wounds or damaged mucus layer are present.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

A mucus or tissue sample may be taken to identify the causative bacterium through microscopic examination or bacterial culture. Treatment

Treatment relies on appropriate antibiotic therapy prescribed by a veterinarian after identification of the causative bacterium if possible. Improving water quality is essential and forms an integral part of care; without it, medication alone remains of limited effectiveness.

Can this disease be transmitted to humans?

No, this is not a zoonotic disease. The bacteria involved are specific to the aquatic environment and do not infect humans under normal contact conditions.

Can a single sick piranha in the tank contaminate the others?

Yes, if the water quality is poor, the other fish in the same tank are exposed to the same opportunistic bacteria and can develop the disease, especially if they too are weakened or injured.

Should a sick piranha be isolated?
