Light infections often go unnoticed, but heavy parasite loads weaken the animal and may lead to progressive weight loss despite maintained or reduced appetite. The disease affects both wild-caught fish and those bred in captivity, with higher prevalence in recently introduced aquarium fish.

Causes and risk factors

Various species of intestinal roundworms can parasitize the piranha's digestive tract.
