This condition typically progresses gradually but can worsen if left untreated.

The most common signs are redness, crusting, and areas without quills or with sparse quills. The skin may weep or emit an unusual odor. The animal scratches or licks the affected area repeatedly. Non-healing wounds, localized swelling, or abscess formation may occur. In more severe cases, the animal may become lethargic, lose appetite, and develop fever.

Causes and risk factors
Infection occurs when bacteria naturally present on the skin (such as certain staphylococci) or in the environment enter through a wound, scratch, bite, or skin irritation. An imbalance of skin flora, injury from broken quills, or contact with soiled bedding promotes the development of infection.
A damp environment, dirty or poorly maintained bedding, inadequate pen hygiene, and overcrowding increase the risk. Injuries from fighting between animals, a weakened immune system (stress, concurrent illness, poor nutrition), and skin parasites that create entry points are also contributing factors.

Direct contact with infected lesions or a contaminated environment (soiled bedding, shared wounds).

Treatment
Treatment is usually based on antibiotics suited to the identified bacterium, given locally or systemically depending on severity. Supportive care (anti-inflammatory medication, pain management) may be added based on veterinary advice.

Prevention
Maintaining a clean and dry pen with bedding changed regularly limits bacterial growth. Regular inspection of the animal's skin and quills to detect any lesions early is recommended. Avoiding overcrowding and situations of stress or fighting helps reduce injury. A balanced diet supports the skin's natural defenses.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper, form abscesses, or progress to generalized infection (septicemia), potentially serious. Localized and lasting quill loss or abnormal skin scarring may also occur.
