What is it?
The crested porcupine, like all rodents, has incisors that grow throughout its life. In a healthy animal, chewing wears these teeth continuously and maintains correct alignment.
Dental malocclusion is a misalignment between the upper and lower incisors, or between the molars. The teeth no longer wear against each other properly.
They continue to grow without being worn down, resulting in teeth that become too long, deformed, and sometimes curved inward into the mouth or outward through the lips.

The first signs are often subtle: the animal eats more slowly, drops food, or appears to select only softer items.
Over time, progressive loss of appetite is observed, along with weight loss, and sometimes excess saliva that wets the fur around the muzzle.
The mouth may emit a foul odor. Wounds or small internal injuries (cheeks, tongue, palate) appear when misaligned teeth injure soft tissues with each chewing motion.
In advanced cases, the incisors may become visibly too long, twisted, or even pierce the lip. The animal may become lethargic and less active than usual.

Causes and risk factors
Malocclusion may be congenital: the animal is born with an upper and lower jaw of unequal length, preventing the teeth from wearing normally against each other.
It may also be acquired, following trauma (impact, fall, broken tooth) that alters the growth direction of a tooth, or from a dental root infection (abscess) that disrupts growth.
Inappropriate diet is a major cause in captive animals: a diet that is too soft, too rich in pellets, and lacking fibrous vegetables and hard materials to gnaw does not allow natural tooth wear.
Insufficient calcium or vitamin D in the diet can also weaken the dental structure and the bone framework of the jaw.
Living in captivity with a low-fiber, low-abrasive diet significantly increases the risk.
The absence of materials to gnaw (branches, bark) deprives the animal of the essential natural wear.
Genetic origin or inbreeding in a breeding group can favor jaw abnormalities.
A history of facial trauma or dental infection is also a risk factor.
Advanced age can worsen an existing malocclusion, as continuous dental growth makes deformities more pronounced over time.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian performs a careful examination of the oral cavity, often under sedation or light anesthesia since a complete examination of the back teeth is difficult in an awake and uncooperative animal. The alignment of the incisors and molars is evaluated, and wounds, abscesses, or signs of infection are looked for. Skull radiography or a CT scan may be useful to visualize tooth roots, detect a deep abscess, or assess the shape of the jaws.
Treatment
Management relies mainly on regular mechanical correction of overgrown teeth, performed by the veterinarian using appropriate instruments (filing or grinding). These sessions often need to be repeated at regular intervals because the underlying cause (malformed jaw) persists. If infection is present, antibiotic treatment may be prescribed. Anti-inflammatories or painkillers are used to relieve the animal in case of wounds or eating discomfort. In severe or recurring cases, surgical extraction of the affected tooth or teeth may be considered. Dietary adjustment (texture, fiber content) always accompanies treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Providing a diet rich in hard plant fibers (branches, bark, whole fibrous vegetables) allows the animal to wear down its teeth naturally through gnawing. Avoiding overly processed or soft feed is essential. Adequate, balanced calcium and vitamin D intake supports the strength of dental and bone structures. Regular veterinary checkups, including a mouth examination during routine visits, allow early detection of malocclusion before complications develop. In breeding situations, avoiding reproduction of animals with known jaw abnormalities limits hereditary transmission.
Possible complications
Without treatment, malocclusion leads to progressive weight loss that can develop into severe malnutrition. Misaligned teeth cause chronic wounds in the mouth, which may become infected and form painful abscesses. A tooth that has become too long can completely prevent mouth closure or cause serious injury to surrounding tissues (lips, tongue, palate). An untreated dental infection can spread to the jaw bone (osteomyelitis) or, more rarely, become systemic.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal eats less or avoids hard food. It drools excessively or has wet fur around its mouth. Weight loss is noticed. An unusual foul odor comes from the mouth. Visibly overgrown, twisted, or broken teeth are observed. The animal appears depressed, hides more than usual, or shows signs of pain while eating.
Prognosis
Prognosis depends on how early treatment begins and on the underlying cause. An acquired malocclusion detected early and monitored regularly allows the animal to maintain good quality of life through periodic dental care. A congenital malocclusion linked to jaw malformation, however, requires lifelong management, with corrections needing to be repeated regularly. Without treatment, the prognosis is guarded due to the risk of malnutrition and chronic infections.

Why do a porcupine's teeth keep growing all the time?
Like all rodents, a porcupine's incisors have no closed root: they grow continuously throughout the animal's life. Normally, wear from gnawing and chewing compensates for this growth.
Can a crested porcupine permanently cure a malocclusion?
