The oarfish (Regalecus glesne), also known as ribbon fish or king of the herrings, is a deep-sea marine fish rarely seen alive, particularly in public aquariums or during scientific studies. Its skin is exceptionally thin, lacks true scales, and is covered with a fragile protective mucus layer. Bacterial skin infection occurs when opportunistic bacteria attack the skin, most often when the animal is stressed, injured, or kept in unsuitable water conditions.

This condition affects mainly oarfish held in captivity, since oarfish are deep-sea creatures highly sensitive to changes in pressure, temperature, and water quality. Few documented cases exist in the wild, as the species is difficult to observe and study alive.
