Bacterial skin infection in hammerhead sharks is a disease affecting the skin of this large cartilaginous fish, most often seen in aquariums or marine animal care facilities. It appears as lesions, ulcers, or areas of damaged skin caused by opportunistic bacteria naturally present in seawater. These bacteria take advantage of weakened skin to establish and multiply. This condition is rare in the wild but documented in hammerhead sharks kept in captivity, particularly during transport or periods of significant stress.

Early signs are often subtle: a small area of discolored, rough, or slightly swollen skin. Over time, open wounds, crusts, or areas where the skin appears 'eaten away' or irritated may be observed. The animal may rub against the tank walls or décor, as if relieving itching or discomfort. In more advanced cases, the shark may swim abnormally, stay near the surface or bottom, lose appetite, and become lethargic. An unusual odor may sometimes emanate from infected wounds.

Causes and risk factors

The infection is caused by opportunistic marine bacteria, notably species from the genera Vibrio, Aeromonas, or Pseudomonas, naturally present in seawater. These bacteria generally pose no problem for a healthy shark with intact skin. They become pathogenic when the skin barrier is broken, by an injury, friction against a wall or another animal, or damage from poor water quality.

Stress from transport, capture, or environmental change weakens the skin's natural defenses. Poor water quality—with unbalanced physical and chemical parameters or elevated nitrite or ammonia levels—also promotes these infections. Insufficient swimming space, abrasive walls or décor, and cohabitation with aggressive animals can cause injuries that become entry points for bacteria. A weakened immune system from another disease or improper diet also increases risk.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Diagnosis is based on direct observation of skin lesions by a veterinarian specializing in aquatic or exotic animals. A sample taken from the affected area (swab or biopsy) allows identification of the bacteria responsible through bacterial culture and determines which treatments they are susceptible to. Analysis of the tank water is also performed to identify any contributing factors.

Treatment

Treatment uses appropriate antibiotics, ideally selected after bacterial analysis, given by routes compatible with the aquatic environment. Local wound care may be provided alongside antibiotic therapy. Correction of water parameters and reducing the animal's stress are integral parts of management. In all cases, treatment must be prescribed and monitored by a veterinarian specializing in aquatic animals—never attempt self-treatment.

Prevention

Prevention relies first and foremost on strict water quality management: regular monitoring of physical and chemical parameters, appropriate filtration, and regular water changes. Provide sufficient swimming space free of sharp edges or rough surfaces to minimize the risk of injury. Quarantine new animals before introducing them to a shared tank to prevent the introduction of pathogens. A balanced diet suited to the species helps maintain good overall immune status.

Possible complications

Left untreated, the infection can spread deep into tissues, reach muscles or internal organs, and lead to sepsis (generalized infection), which can be fatal. Extensive skin lesions can also disrupt the animal's osmoregulation—its ability to maintain salt and water balance in its body—which worsens its overall condition.

Repeated rubbing behavior against tank decorations or walls.

Prognosis

The prognosis is generally favorable if the infection is detected and treated early, with correction of stress factors and water quality. However, if diagnosis is delayed or the infection becomes generalized, the prognosis becomes guarded or poor.

Frequently asked questions

Can this infection be transmitted to humans?

The bacteria in question (such as Vibrio or Aeromonas) can occasionally infect humans if a wound is exposed to contaminated water, but this is not direct transmission from the shark itself. Simple hygiene precautions are sufficient when handling.

Can a wild hammerhead shark catch this disease?

It's possible but rare, because in their natural environment wounds usually heal without complications thanks to a less stressful setting and water that is generally of better quality than in captivity.

Can this type of infection be completely prevented?

You cannot eliminate it completely, but good water quality management and an appropriate environment significantly reduce the risk.
