Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a parasitic disease affecting the digestive tract of hammerhead sharks. These worms live in the stomach or intestines of the animal and feed at its expense. They are found in both wild hammerhead sharks and those kept in aquariums or marine dolphinariums. Light infestation often goes unnoticed, but a heavy parasitic load can seriously weaken the animal.

In heavily infested animals, general fatigue and overall weakness may develop.

The disease is caused by nematodes (roundworms) that parasitize the digestive tract, with several genera known in elasmobranchs (sharks and rays). These parasites often have a life cycle involving intermediate hosts, such as small marine invertebrates or prey fish. The shark becomes infected by consuming these prey carrying parasitic larvae.
Animals fed uncontrolled wild prey are more exposed, as these prey may harbor nematode larvae. Captive conditions in aquariums sometimes favor parasitic accumulation if food sanitation management is not rigorous. Chronic stress, poor water quality, or unbalanced diet can weaken the animal's natural defenses and worsen infestation.
