It most often appears when the fish's skin is weakened by injury, stress, or poor water quality. This disease affects both wild pike-perch and those raised in ponds or intensive aquaculture. It results in visible skin lesions that can worsen rapidly if left untreated.

Early signs include reddish patches or discolored areas on the skin. Abnormal mucus patches, erosions, or small open sores may appear, sometimes with a whitish or grayish appearance around them. Fins can become frayed or damaged along the edges. The affected fish often swims abnormally, remains still, or rubs against the tank walls, rocks, or bottom as if trying to relieve itching. Loss of appetite, lethargy, and sometimes slight localized swelling around the lesions are also observed.

Causes and risk factors
Several genera of opportunistic bacteria can be responsible, notably bacteria from the Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, or Flavobacterium groups, naturally present in freshwater. These bacteria take advantage of a break in the skin—the fish's true protective barrier—to establish themselves and multiply.
Poor water quality (high organic load, low oxygen, or abrupt temperature swings) weakens the pike-perch's natural defenses. High fish density in the same pond increases stress and contact injuries. Any preexisting lesion, caused by handling, transport, fighting between fish, or external parasites, opens the door to infection. A weakened immune system from prolonged stress or another disease also increases the risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian or aquaculture specialist first examines the visible lesions and the pond's history (water quality, stocking density, recent stress). A sample from the skin lesion allows identification of the causative bacteria through bacterial culture or laboratory analysis. This examination is important for selecting appropriate treatment and ruling out other possible causes such as parasites or fungi.
Treatment
Treatment relies on an antibiotic appropriate to the bacteria identified, administered under veterinary supervision, often orally through feed or by medicated bath depending on the farming situation. Improved water quality and stress reduction always accompany treatment. Supportive care, such as adding salt or mild disinfectants to the water, may also be recommended by the specialist.

Prevention
Maintaining good water quality is the most important measure: effective filtration, adequate oxygen levels, and regular monitoring of water parameters. Avoiding overstocking in ponds and rough handling limits injury. Quarantining new fish before introducing them into a shared pond allows detection of already sick animals. Disinfecting equipment used between different ponds reduces bacterial spread.
Possible complications
Without treatment, lesions can spread and affect deeper tissues, causing significant ulcers. The infection can also become systemic throughout the body, which becomes much more serious and difficult to treat. Mortality may occur, particularly in farming operations where multiple stress factors are combined.
