It does not appear as a "disease" in the classical sense observable in individual animals, but rather as visible degradation of the entire rotifer population being raised in tanks or vats.

Since the rotifer is microscopic, symptoms are not observed in individual animals but rather as visible signs across the whole cultivated population. Rotifers show slowed or erratic swimming, a gradual then sometimes sudden drop in the number of living individuals, the culture water becomes cloudy, sticky, or gives off a foul odor, and debris or mucus accumulates at the bottom of the tank. Culture growth stops and may reverse quickly.

Causes and risk factors

The rotifer lives in a confined culture medium rich in organic matter (food scraps, algae, waste products), which favors bacterial multiplication. Bacterial infection occurs when opportunistic bacteria (often Vibrio or other marine bacteria) grow excessively in the water and colonize the rotifer, both inside and outside its body. This can weaken the animal, disrupt its digestion, and cause death in large numbers.

Risk factors include excessive stocking density of rotifers, overfeeding or poor-quality food, inadequate water renewal, elevated temperature promoting bacterial multiplication, and poor overall hygiene of the farming system (pipes, tanks, filters).

Transmission

Contamination spreads mainly through the culture water itself, from one rotifer to another by direct contact and through shared water. There is also a risk of transmission to fish larvae or crustacean larvae that consume bacteria-carrying rotifers, which can subsequently affect the health of these young farmed animals.

Possible complications

The main complication is complete collapse of the rotifer culture, requiring the farming to begin again from a new healthy stock. Another significant risk is transmission of pathogenic bacteria to fish or crustacean larvae fed with these rotifers, which can cause disease and mortality in larval farming tanks.
