Parasitism by predatory rotifers is not a disease in the classical sense, but rather a biological imbalance affecting rotifer populations, particularly those raised in aquaculture as live food for fish larvae. Certain rotifers, such as species of the genus Asplanchna, behave as predators within the culture itself and consume the filter-feeding rotifers normally used (for example, species of the genus Brachionus).

This phenomenon is primarily a matter of aquaculture farm management rather than individual pathology, but it results in a rapid and sometimes total decline of useful rotifer populations.

The term "symptom" does not truly apply to individual rotifers. What can be observed is a change at the level of the culture population: a progressive then rapid decrease in the total number of rotifers, the visible presence under the microscope of predatory individuals with a different form (often larger, lacking a rigid carapace), and sometimes debris or partially digested rotifers floating in the culture medium.

In advanced cases, the culture may become clear or transparent, a sign that the useful population has collapsed.

Causes and risk factors

This phenomenon is caused by accidental introduction into a rotifer culture intended for farming (often rotifers of the genus Brachionus used as live food in aquaculture) of predatory rotifer species. The best-known genus is Asplanchna, a rotifer lacking a protective carapace (lorica), equipped with a sac-shaped digestive system that allows it to swallow whole prey, including smaller rotifers.

These predators develop within the culture itself, feed on the rotifers intended for farming, and can, in a short time, cause a sharp decline in the useful population.

Water, culture equipment, or contaminated initial inoculum are the main pathways for introduction of these predators.

Intensive rotifers cultures in closed tanks or basins used in aquaculture hatcheries are most at risk. Unfiltered water, equipment that is inadequately disinfected between production cycles, or low-quality initial inoculum increase the risk of introducing predatory rotifers. Very high culture density can also promote rapid spread of the predator once introduced.

Transmission

This is not transmission in the classical infectious sense. Predatory rotifers appear in a culture through contamination of the water, farm equipment, or uncontrolled initial inoculum. Once present, they reproduce within the culture itself and directly consume the filter-feeding rotifers, with no contagion mechanism comparable to an infectious disease.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

With rotifers, there is no individual veterinary examination as there would be with a pet. The problem is identified by an aquarist, fish farmer, or rotifer culture laboratory technician (rotifers being used notably as live food for fish larvae) through microscopic observation of the population.

Prevention relies essentially on hygiene and control measures in aquaculture: use of certified healthy rotifer inoculum, thorough filtration of water entering culture tanks or basins, regular equipment disinfection, and frequent microscopic monitoring of populations.

Rapid isolation of any culture suspected of contamination prevents spread of the predator to other tanks.

Possible complications

Complete collapse of the rotifer culture can occur if the predator is not detected in time. This has direct economic consequences for aquaculture farms, as rotifers are an essential live food source for many fish and crustacean larvae during their first days of life.

A shortage of available rotifers can then compromise the survival of fed larvae, with a cascading effect on the entire production.

When to see a veterinarian

Observation of a rapid and unexplained drop in rotifer density in a culture tank.

Presence under the microscope of individuals with unusual shape or larger than the normal population.

Abnormally clear or transparent appearance of the culture medium, suggesting population collapse.

Any suspicion of cross-contamination between multiple production tanks or basins.

Prognosis

The outlook for a contaminated rotifer culture depends on how quickly the problem is detected. Early intervention—isolation, medium replacement, and reseeding—often allows the stock to be saved. Conversely, advanced contamination typically results in total loss of the affected culture, requiring the start of a fresh batch with new inoculum.

There is no direct impact on human health or adult fish; the problem remains confined to rotifer farming management.
