Platypus leech infestation is an external parasitosis that affects this unique Australian semi-aquatic animal. A specific leech, called Ornithobdella, lives attached to the skin, fur or between the toes of the platypus. It feeds on the blood of its host. This parasitosis is little known because the platypus itself is a rare, discreet animal and difficult to observe in its natural environment. In a Tunisian context, this sheet remains purely informative because the species is not present outside Australia.

The signs are often discreet because the platypus is a nocturnal and furtive animal, difficult to observe.
We can spot the presence of small leeches clinging to the skin, often on the legs, tail or body.

In a heavily parasitized animal, we may observe general fatigue, a less well-groomed coat or progressive weight loss linked to repeated blood loss.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by the attachment and blood feeding of a specialized aquatic leech of the genus Ornithobdella, which lives in the same freshwater bodies as the platypus.
Animals living in freshwater areas rich in leeches, slow-moving or stagnant waterways, and periods when the platypus spends a lot of time submerged hunting are contributing factors.
A weakened, injured or already sick animal could be more susceptible to a significant infestation.
Transmission
Transmission occurs by direct contact in fresh water, the leech spontaneously attaching to the skin of the platypus during its swimming or diving phases.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
