Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by a single-celled parasite of the genus Leishmania, most often the species Leishmania infantum in the Mediterranean basin. This parasite is transmitted by the bite of an infected female sand fly, a small flying insect active especially at dusk and night during the warm months.
Living in an area where phlebotomine sandflies are abundant, typically warm Mediterranean climates, increases exposure risk. Proximity to infected dogs or other wild reservoir species promotes parasite circulation. A weakened immune system—for example in an elderly, ill, or stressed animal—can favour disease development after infection.
Transmission
The parasite is transmitted essentially by the bite of infected sand flies, which become infected themselves by biting an animal carrying the parasite (dog, another mongoose, or other wild mammals). Direct transmission between animals without the insect is considered rare but is not totally ruled out according to some studies. The Egyptian mongoose could serve as a wild reservoir, participating in the maintenance of the parasite cycle in nature, particularly in areas where dogs and wildlife coexist.
