White spot disease is a parasitic infestation of the skin and gills of fish, including flatfish. It is caused by a ciliate protozoan that lodges under the fish's skin and forms small cysts visible to the naked eye. It is one of the most common parasitic conditions in fish farming and in the rearing of flatfish, affecting both farmed populations in ponds and wild populations in enclosed waters.
The parasite responsible has a development cycle that depends strongly on water temperature. Once established in a pond, it can spread very rapidly and affect a large number of fish within days, especially when stocking density is high.
