Fin rot is a common bacterial infection in turbot and other flatfish farmed in aquaculture or pond environments. The condition causes gradual deterioration of the fin edges, which become frayed and may disappear entirely if untreated. It is an environmentally linked disease that typically develops when water quality is poor or when the fish is stressed. With early identification and treatment, the outlook is generally favourable.

Initial signs appear at the fin edges: they become cloudy, whitish or slightly reddened, then gradually fray. Over time, tissue becomes necrotic and the fin shortens, sometimes disappearing almost entirely. The affected area may bleed or show a characteristic red line at the inflammation border. The fish may swim abnormally, rub against the sides or bottom of the tank, and display lethargy with reduced appetite. In advanced cases, secondary wounds may develop on the body as the infection spreads.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by opportunistic bacteria, most commonly Flexibacter, Aeromonas or Vibrio species, which are naturally present in the water but become pathogenic when the fish is weakened or injured. They colonise the fin edges, often following minor wounds, bites from other fish or rubbing against rough surfaces.
Poor water quality, particularly high levels of organic matter, ammonia, or nitrites, is the primary risk factor. Overcrowding, stress from transport or handling, water that is too warm or poorly oxygenated, and existing injuries also increase the risk. A weakened immune system from another illness or inadequate diet makes the fish more susceptible.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through direct contact in contaminated water, spreading from one fish to another, particularly when wounds are present and water quality is poor.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in aquaculture or exotic animals diagnoses the condition through clinical observation of the fins and the fish's overall condition. Water testing to identify contributing factors may be performed, and sometimes a sample is sent to the laboratory to identify the responsible bacterium.
Treatment
Treatment always combines improvement of water quality with antibacterial therapy, administered as a bath or systemically depending on the case and prescribed by a veterinarian. Topical antiseptic products may also be used to disinfect the affected areas.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based mainly on maintaining good water quality: effective filtration, regular monitoring of parameters (ammonia, nitrites, dissolved oxygen), and routine cleaning of tanks or aquariums. Overcrowding should be avoided and stressful handling kept to a minimum. A balanced diet strengthens the fish's natural defenses. Daily observation of the fish makes it possible to spot early signs and take action quickly.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread to the base of the fin, preventing normal regrowth. It may also extend to the fish's body and cause a generalized infection, which can be fatal. Severely affected fins may result in permanent cosmetic and functional damage.
