Bleaching disease is a condition observed in sea cucumbers, marine invertebrate animals that live on the sea floor.
It manifests as progressive discoloration of the skin, called the tegument in these animals, which becomes pale or whitish instead of its natural color.
This phenomenon is not caused by a single specific microbe. It most often reflects the animal's response to a degraded or stressful environment.

The main sign is discoloration of the tegument, which shifts from a normal dark shade to a pale, whitish, or grayish color.
This discoloration may be localized to part of the body or extend across the entire animal.
Softening of the body wall is often seen, with the animal losing its normal firmness.
Appetite decreases and the animal becomes less active, remaining motionless for longer periods than usual.
In advanced cases, small wounds or ulcerations may appear on the bleached areas, sometimes accompanied by leakage of internal fluid (partial evisceration).
These lesions do not heal well and can worsen rapidly.

Opportunistic microorganisms, particularly certain bacteria naturally present in the environment, can secondarily colonize the already weakened tegument and worsen lesions.
General weakening of the animal, linked to rough handling, transport, or rapid transfer to a new tank, can also trigger or worsen the condition.
Farms with high-density tank or cage systems are most at risk.
Stagnant water that is poorly exchanged or polluted with organic waste significantly increases risk.
Large fluctuations in temperature or salinity, particularly during seasonal changes, weaken animals.
Frequent handling, transport, or sorting of animals for sale are critical risk moments.
Young sea cucumbers recently introduced to a new tank appear more sensitive than well-acclimated adults.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis relies mainly on careful observation of the skin appearance and the animal's behaviour.
A qualified professional in marine invertebrate pathology or a specialized veterinarian can examine the lesions and assess their extent.
Water analysis from the basin is often carried out in parallel to identify the parameters involved (oxygen, temperature, ammonia, etc.).
In some cases, samples can be sent to a laboratory to screen for possible secondary bacterial infection.
Treatment
There is no single validated specific treatment for this condition; management aims above all to correct the rearing conditions.
Immediate improvement of water quality and reduction of animal stocking density are the first measures to implement.
If secondary bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed, appropriate antibacterial treatment can be considered under specialist supervision.
Support baths or treatments may be offered according to professional recommendations, always taking into account the particular sensitivity of these invertebrates to chemical treatments.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies above all on good water quality management: adequate water exchange, monitoring of dissolved oxygen and temperature.
It is recommended not to overstock basins or rearing areas, in order to limit stress linked to population density.
Regular cleaning of facilities helps reduce the buildup of organic matter and waste.
Handling of animals should be kept to a minimum and performed gently, avoiding thermal shock during transfers.
Progressive acclimation when introducing new animals to a basin is also advisable.
Possible complications
Without improvement of conditions, bleaching can progress to deep skin ulceration.
Evisceration, that is, expulsion of internal organs through the body wall, can occur in severe cases.
These complications greatly increase the risk of mortality, particularly when several animals in the same basin are affected simultaneously, which can result in significant economic losses in aquaculture.

Is bleaching contagious between sea cucumbers?
The phenomenon itself is not a classical contagious infection. It primarily reflects stress related to environmental conditions. However, if opportunistic bacteria develop on weakened tissues, they can spread more readily in a pool where water quality is poor for all the animals.
Can a sea cucumber that has already bleached be saved?
It depends on the stage. If the discoloration is recent and husbandry conditions are quickly improved, the animal can recover. However, in cases of deep wounds or evisceration, the chances of survival decrease significantly.
Does this disease affect only livestock farming?
It is mainly documented in aquaculture farming, where water density and quality are easier to monitor. Similar stress phenomena can, however, occur in natural environments under degraded conditions, such as local pollution or temperature increases.
Should the affected animals be isolated?
