Metabolic bone disease, also called fibrous osteodystrophy, is a very common condition in common chameleons kept in captivity. It results from an imbalance between calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D3 in the body. This imbalance gradually weakens the bones, which become soft, deformed, or brittle. It is one of the main causes of death in poorly cared-for chameleons in terrariums.

Early signs are subtle: the chameleon moves less, seems hesitant on branches, or refuses to climb. Over time, the legs may become deformed, bent, or trembling. The animal may limp, struggle to stand upright, or have difficulty catching prey. The lower jaw may become soft or deformed, making eating difficult. In advanced cases, spontaneous fractures can occur, even during normal movements such as lunging at prey. Growth in young animals slows or stops.

Causes and risk factors

The main cause is a lack of calcium in the diet, often worsened by excess phosphorus or insufficient vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is essential for the body to absorb calcium properly. In chameleons, it is normally produced by the skin when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun. In captivity, lack of exposure to appropriate UVB lighting prevents this natural production, even if the diet is rich in calcium. The body then draws calcium from the bones to maintain a normal level in the blood, gradually weakening them.

The main risk factors are a terrarium without UVB lighting specific to reptiles, a diet consisting only of insects not supplemented with calcium, and the lack of appropriate vitamin and mineral supplementation for the species. Young growing chameleons and breeding females, whose calcium needs are higher, are particularly vulnerable. A poorly positioned terrarium, an old or incorrectly positioned UVB lamp also increases the risk.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Prevention

Prevention relies primarily on high-quality UVB lighting appropriate for diurnal reptiles, replaced regularly because its effectiveness decreases over time even though visible light persists.

Insects used as prey must be dusted regularly with a calcium supplement, alternating with a vitamin supplement containing vitamin D3, according to recommendations suited to the species.

Reasonable exposure to natural sunlight, without glass or plastic that block UVB rays, is also beneficial.

Regular veterinary check-ups allow early signs to be detected before deformities appear.

Possible complications

Complications include spontaneous fractures, permanent deformities of the spine or limbs, inability to feed properly due to jaw deformity, and digestive or respiratory problems related to ribcage deformity.

In severe untreated cases, the outcome may be fatal.

The limbs appear twisted, trembling, or weak.

The jaw seems soft or deformed.

The animal has difficulty catching or swallowing prey.

Does an indoor chameleon really need UVB?

Yes, absolutely. Even in a bright room, natural light filtered through a window pane does not contain useful UVB. A specific UVB lamp for reptiles, changed regularly, is essential.

Is getting plenty of calcium enough to prevent the disease?

No. Without vitamin D3 (produced through UVB exposure or taken as a supplement), ingested calcium is not properly absorbed by the body, even in large quantities.

Can bone deformities disappear with treatment?

Improvement is possible in young animals if the disease is caught early, but deformities that have already developed, especially in adults, are often permanent.

How to know if your UVB lighting is still effective?

UVB bulbs lose their effectiveness over time even if they still emit light normally. It is recommended to replace them according to the manufacturer's guidelines, generally several times per year.
