Early signs are subtle: the animal may seem less active or slightly less mobile than usual. As the condition progresses, limping or abnormal gait develops, sometimes accompanied by reluctance to climb or jump as before. Deformities of the limbs or spine may become visible, as well as swelling at the joints or ribs. In advanced cases, fractures may occur from minor trauma, and the animal may show significant pain or refuse to move. Growth delays are observable in affected young animals.

Causes and risk factors
The disease most often results from prolonged nutritional imbalance: insufficient calcium intake, excess phosphorus relative to calcium, or vitamin D deficiency. In captivity, limited exposure to natural sunlight reduces the skin's synthesis of vitamin D, worsening the imbalance. A diet too high in sweet fruits and low in calcium-rich vegetables, or the absence of appropriate supplementation, promotes disease development. In young growing chimpanzees, increased mineral demands make the animal particularly vulnerable to these deficiencies.
Young growing chimpanzees are most at risk, as their mineral needs are particularly high. Life in captivity with limited access to natural sunlight, inadequate supplementation, and an unbalanced diet—too high in sweet fruits and low in calcium-rich vegetables—are the main risk factors. Pregnant or nursing females also have increased nutritional needs that, if unmet, increase the risk of developing the disease.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian first reviews the animal's dietary and living history (captivity, sun exposure, diet type). Clinical examination looks for bone pain, deformities, or abnormal gait.
X-rays allow visualization of bone density, possible fractures or deformities of the long bones and spine.
Blood tests measure levels of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, as well as markers of bone metabolism such as parathyroid hormone.
In some cases, bone biopsy may be considered to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
Correction of the diet is the foundation of treatment, with rebalancing of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D intake under veterinary supervision.
Targeted mineral and vitamin supplementation may be introduced, adjusted according to blood test results and clinical progress.
Controlled exposure to natural light or specific lighting promoting vitamin D synthesis is often recommended.
If pain is present, painkillers may be prescribed, and rest limiting activities that risk fracture is advised during the recovery phase.
Fractures or severe deformities may require specialized surgical care.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on a varied and balanced diet that reproduces the natural diet of the species as closely as possible, rich in a variety of plant foods.
Regular access to natural sunlight, or alternatively appropriate lighting providing the rays necessary for vitamin D synthesis, is essential in captivity.
Regular veterinary check-ups, including nutritional monitoring, allow early detection of any imbalance before symptoms appear.
Supplementation with calcium and vitamin D should only be started on veterinary advice, as excess can also be harmful.

Pathological fractures—fractures occurring without significant trauma due to bone fragility—are the most feared complication.
Permanent skeletal deformities may develop, particularly in the limbs and spine, limiting the animal's mobility.
