Metabolic bone disease is a disorder that affects bone strength in emperor penguins. It occurs mainly in animals kept in captivity, in zoos or aquariums, when diet or environment do not adequately meet the need for calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Bones gradually become more fragile and less dense, which can lead to deformity or fractures. This disease particularly affects young birds during growth, but can also appear in adults under certain conditions.

Early signs are often subtle. Reluctance to move, stiff or limping gait, or a penguin staying lying down more than usual may be noticed.
