Metabolic bone disease is a condition that affects bone strength. It develops when an animal does not receive enough calcium, or too little vitamin D, or an improper balance between calcium and phosphorus in its diet. The numbat is a highly specialized small Australian marsupial that feeds almost exclusively on termites in the wild. In captivity or wildlife care facilities, replicating this diet is difficult, making this animal particularly vulnerable to this type of disorder. The bones then become more fragile, become deformed, or break more easily than normal.

Signs are often subtle at first, then progressively worsen.
Limping that shifts between legs or persists may be observed, difficulty rising or moving normally, and some stiffness in movement.
The animal may appear lethargic, less active, and unwilling to move or climb as it normally would.
Pain on touching the limbs or spine may occur.
In advanced cases, deformities of the legs or jaw may develop, along with fractures that occur without obvious trauma.
Food intake may decrease if the jaw is affected.

Causes and risk factors
The main cause is prolonged dietary imbalance: insufficient calcium intake, excess phosphorus relative to calcium, or lack of vitamin D which prevents the body from using available calcium properly.
In numbats, this imbalance is often linked to a substitute diet in captivity that does not accurately reflect the nutritional composition of wild termites, the natural and nearly sole food source.
Lack of exposure to natural sunlight may also play a role, as vitamin D is partly produced by sun exposure in many species.
Growing young animals and lactating females are more vulnerable, as their calcium requirements are higher.
Numberbats kept in captivity, wildlife centers, or in recovery are at greater risk than wild individuals, as their diet is artificial.
Lack of dietary diversity, absence of appropriate supplementation, or an enclosure with limited exposure to natural light increase the risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the animal's feeding history, clinical observation of the limbs and gait, and particularly on imaging tests such as radiography, which allows visualization of bone density and identification of any fractures or deformities.
Blood tests may be used to complete the assessment and evaluate calcium and phosphorus levels.
Treatment
Treatment consists mainly of correcting the diet with appropriate supplementation in calcium and vitamin D, prescribed and adjusted by a veterinarian.
In painful cases, anti-inflammatory or pain relief medication may be used.
Rest and limited movement are often necessary in cases of marked bone fragility, to prevent fractures.
Surgery may be considered in the event of a fracture, but remains delicate in an animal so small and fragile.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based primarily on feeding a diet as close as possible to the natural diet, rich in calcium and balanced in phosphorus.
Calcium and vitamin D supplementation can be provided, but only under the supervision of a veterinarian or wildlife specialist, as excess can also be harmful.
Access to natural light, when possible, is also recommended.
Regular monitoring of growth and behavior in young animals allows early detection of problems.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the disease can progress to spontaneous fractures, permanent skeletal deformities, and significant loss of mobility.
In young animals, delayed bone growth may become established long-term.

The outlook becomes more guarded in advanced disease, with bone complications that may be permanent, particularly in young animals still growing.

Is the numbat more susceptible to this disease than other animals?
Yes, because of its highly specialized diet based on termites, which is difficult to reproduce faithfully in captivity or in a care center, this increases the risk of calcium imbalance.
Can this disease be completely cured?
If treated early, the animal can recover good bone health. However, old deformities or fractures can leave lasting effects.
Can you give calcium yourself to a limping numbat?
