Metabolic bone disease is a disorder affecting the skeleton of quokkas, often when they are kept in captivity, in wildlife parks, or in private homes (in countries where this is permitted).

It results from an imbalance between calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D in the diet. The bones gradually become more fragile, less dense, and deform or break more easily than normal.

This disease is well known in many marsupials and small herbivores fed inappropriately. The quokka, which is very sensitive to dietary errors, is particularly at risk when its diet departs from the natural vegetation it consumes in the wild.
