Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria of the Chlamydia genus, including Chlamydia pecorum. It frequently affects common wombats in the wild, particularly in Australia. This disease can remain silent for a long time before causing severe damage to the eyes and urinary or genital tracts. In wombats, it is considered a significant health problem for wild populations.

The most visible signs concern the eyes: redness, discharge, opacity of the cornea which can lead to complete blindness.
Damage to the urinary and genital tracts is also common: the animal may have difficulty urinating, urinate in small quantities, often lick its genitals or have discharge from its posterior.
We also observe a diminished general condition: fatigue, dull coat, progressive weight loss.
Some infected wombats show no outward signs for long periods of time.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by infection with the bacterium Chlamydia pecorum, a microorganism that multiplies inside the host's cells. It preferentially colonizes the ocular, urinary and genital mucous membranes.
Stress, undernutrition, drought and habitat degradation favor the appearance of clinical signs in animals already carrying the bacteria.
Promiscuity between individuals, particularly in shared burrows, increases the risk of transmission.
Young animals and individuals already weakened by other diseases (such as sarcoptic mange) seem more vulnerable.
Transmission
The bacteria is transmitted by direct contact between animals, particularly during mating, between the mother and her young, or by contact with contaminated ocular, urinary or genital secretions. Cohabitation in burrows can promote propagation.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian carries out a complete clinical examination, with particular attention paid to the eyes, urinary tract and genitals.
The definitive diagnosis requires samples (eye, urinary or genital swabs) analyzed in the laboratory to detect the bacteria or its genetic material.
Additional tests such as an ultrasound may be useful to assess kidney or bladder damage.
Treatment
Treatment is mainly based on appropriate antibiotic therapy, prescribed and monitored by a veterinarian.
Supportive care may be necessary: fluid therapy, local eye care, pain management.
The duration of treatment is often long due to the intracellular nature of the bacteria.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
There is no vaccine available in routine use for this disease in wombats to date, although research is underway in Australia.
Prevention is mainly based on limiting stress, maintaining quality habitat and health monitoring of wild populations.
In captivity or in a care center, the isolation of sick animals and rigorous hygiene limit the spread.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can progress to irreversible blindness, kidney failure, permanent infertility or a generalized infection that can threaten the life of the animal.

The animal has red eyes, eye discharge, or visible clouding of the eye.
The wombat seems to have difficulty urinating or urinates abnormally little.
Abnormal discharge is visible from the genitals.
The animal is slaughtered, loses weight or refuses to eat over several days.
Transmission to humans
Certain species of Chlamydia can theoretically infect humans, but the risk of direct transmission from a wombat remains considered low. Basic hygiene precautions (hand washing, gloves when handling sick animals) are recommended for anyone in contact with or in care of wild wombats, particularly staff at wildlife conservation centers.
Prognosis
The prognosis strongly depends on how early the diagnosis is made. Prompt treatment improves the chances of recovery, particularly for early eye damage. On the other hand, advanced cases with blindness or severe kidney damage have a more guarded prognosis, despite treatment.
