Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is a disorder affecting exotic animals such as tarsiers when their diet or light exposure fails to meet their calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D requirements. The bones become fragile, may deform, or break more easily. In tarsiers, small nocturnal primates that are highly specialized and delicate, this disease is particularly concerning in captivity because it often progresses silently before becoming apparent.

Early signs are often subtle: the animal moves less, does not jump as well as usual, or seems stiff after resting.
