Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in tarsiers, small nocturnal insectivorous primates. These worms live in the intestine and feed at the animal's expense, causing gradual deterioration of its overall condition. In animals kept in captivity or observed in their natural environment, this parasitic infection remains one of the most frequent causes of weight loss and digestive problems.

Signs are often subtle at first: soft stools or intermittent diarrhea, gradual weight loss despite maintained appetite, or conversely, loss of appetite. The coat may become dull and poorly maintained. Some animals show mild abdominal bloating or unusual fatigue. With heavy infestations, worms may sometimes be visible in the stools. Young tarsiers may experience stunted growth. Dehydration can develop if diarrhea persists.

Causes and risk factors

Several species of intestinal nematodes can parasitize the tarsier's digestive tract, including worms from the groups of strongyles, pinworms, or ascarids specific to primates. These parasites lay eggs that are shed in the feces, which then contaminate the environment, food (insects), or water.

Tarsiers kept in poorly maintained enclosures with inadequate hygiene or high animal density are at greater risk. Stress, unbalanced diet, young age, or a weakened immune system promote the establishment and worsening of parasitism. Access to uncontrolled wild prey also increases risk.

Transmission

Infection occurs mainly through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in contaminated surroundings, or by eating prey (insects) that themselves carry infective larvae. The cycle may be direct or involve an intermediate host depending on the worm species involved.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian diagnoses the condition by microscopic examination of feces (screening for parasite eggs), sometimes supplemented by blood tests if the animal's general condition is compromised. Direct observation of worms in the feces may guide diagnosis but does not replace it.

Treatment

Prevention

Rigorous enclosure maintenance, with regular removal of feces and disinfection of surfaces, significantly limits contamination. Veterinary monitoring suited to this fragile and demanding species is essential.

Untreated infestation can result in severe weight loss, dehydration, anemia, and general weakness, making the animal more vulnerable to other diseases. In young animals or those already weakened, the outcome can be serious.
