Early signs are often subtle: the newt becomes less active, eats poorly, or appears lethargic. Over time, the limbs may warp, swell at the joints, or become soft. The animal may limp, struggle to move, or show tremors. In advanced cases, there is an inability to right itself, partial paralysis, or even spontaneous fractures during normal movement. The lower jaw can also deform, making feeding difficult.
