Intestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in newts, small amphibians often kept in terrariums or aquaterrariums. These parasites live in the animal's intestines and feed partly on its food and sometimes on its tissues. In small numbers, they often go unnoticed. In large numbers, they can seriously weaken the newt, especially if it is young, old, or already in poor health. This disease affects both wild-caught newts and those bred in captivity, particularly when tank hygiene is not optimal.

Parasitized newts often show few signs at first. Over time, a loss of appetite may be observed, or conversely, normal appetite maintained but progressive weight loss despite adequate feeding. The belly may appear swollen or distended in some individuals. The animal becomes sluggish, stays hidden, and swims less actively than usual. Soft stools or unusual stool texture are sometimes visible in the water or substrate. In advanced cases, small thread-like worms may be seen in the feces or floating in the tank water. Occasional regurgitation or vomiting is possible with heavy parasite loads.

Causes and risk factors
The condition is caused by intestinal nematodes, unsegmented roundworms that colonize the newt's digestive tract. Several species may be involved depending on the region and origin of the animal. Eggs or larvae are released in feces and contaminate the terrarium water or substrate, where they can be ingested by the same animal or by tank mates. Some cycles involve an intermediate host, such as a small aquatic invertebrate consumed by the newt, which sometimes complicates complete parasite eradication.
Risk increases with high density of newts in the same tank. Insufficient water or substrate cleaning promotes accumulation of eggs and larvae. Animals captured from the wild often carry higher parasite loads than those bred in captivity for several generations. Stress from transport, environmental change, or unsuitable housing weakens natural defenses and promotes worm multiplication. Uncontrolled live food, such as prey captured in the wild, may introduce new parasites.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The exotic animal veterinarian usually performs a microscopic examination of faeces to look for roundworm eggs or larvae.
This test, called a faecal smear, often allows identification of the type of parasite involved.
In some cases, more detailed examination or necropsy of a deceased animal may be needed to confirm diagnosis across an entire population.
The animal's general condition, weight, and behaviour are also assessed.
Treatment
Treatment relies on antiparasitic medications specific to nematodes, prescribed and tailored by the veterinarian according to the newt species and severity of infestation.
Because amphibians are highly sensitive to chemicals absorbed through the skin, only a professional should determine the drug and method of administration.
Nutritional support and improved housing conditions often accompany antiparasitic treatment.
In cases affecting multiple animals, thorough tank cleaning and disinfection of equipment are recommended alongside treatment of the animals themselves.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Quarantining any new newt before introducing it to an existing tank limits the risk of bringing in parasites.
Regular cleaning of the water, substrate, and tank surfaces reduces the presence of infective eggs and larvae.
Feeding newts wild-caught prey of unknown origin should be avoided.
Periodic veterinary check-ups, including faecal examination, help detect infestation before severe symptoms appear.
Maintaining good water quality and appropriate temperature supports the animal's natural immunity.

Untreated heavy infestation can lead to severe malnutrition, dehydration, and general decline potentially resulting in death, especially in young newts.
Intestinal damage, sometimes partial obstruction, can occur with very high parasite loads.

Can a newt transmit these worms to humans?
Intestinal nematodes in newts are generally specific to amphibians and are not transmitted to humans. However, it is still recommended to wash your hands thoroughly after handling the animal or cleaning its tank.
How could my newt have caught worms when it's never left its tank?
Infestation can result from a new resident that wasn't quarantined, contaminated live prey, or simply from the multiplication of parasites already present in small numbers, favored by inadequate hygiene.
Can you treat a parasitized newt yourself with an over-the-counter product?
No, self-medication is not recommended. Amphibians easily absorb substances through their skin, and some common antiparasitic drugs are toxic to them. Only a veterinarian experienced with amphibians can choose an appropriate treatment.
Should all newts in the tank be treated if only one is infested?
