Signs are often subtle at first and worsen gradually. Dull, damaged, or poorly formed plumage, brittle feathers, or abnormal feather loss may be seen. The skin can become dry, scaly, or develop crusts, particularly around the beak, eyes, and nostrils. The beak and claws may grow abnormally, either too quickly or in a crooked manner. The bird may appear tired, less active, and less playful, sometimes with behavioral changes such as irritability. Weight loss or conversely excess weight (often linked to an excess of fatty seeds like sunflower) are common. In young growing cockatoos, stunted growth or bone deformities may appear. In severe cases, nervous disorders, muscle weakness, or reproductive problems (thin-shelled eggs, difficult laying) are possible.

Causes and risk factors
The main cause is an unbalanced diet, particularly one made up mostly or entirely of seeds. Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination and take a detailed history of the bird's usual diet. Blood tests may be recommended to check certain levels (such as calcium) and rule out other possible causes of the symptoms. X-rays can be helpful if bone disorders or deformities are suspected. Treatment
