Aspergillosis is a serious fungal infection that mainly affects the respiratory tract. In the bald ibis, a threatened bird particularly monitored in conservation, it represents a significant cause of mortality, particularly among young people and weakened or stressed birds. It is caused by a microscopic fungus naturally present in the environment, called Aspergillus. This disease is not contagious from one bird to another: it comes from the environment.

In the acute form, often in young ibises, we observe sudden respiratory distress: rapid breathing, open beak, abnormal breathing sounds, marked weakness and sometimes rapid death.
In the chronic form, more common in adults, the signs are more discreet and progressive: fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, dull or ruffled feathers, occasional cough and reduced activity.
Neurological disorders can appear if the fungus affects the nervous system, but this remains rarer.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Aspergillus, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus. These fungi live naturally in litter, moldy hay, damp straw, compost or soil. Their very resistant spores are inhaled by the bird and develop in the air sacs and lungs, especially when the immune defenses are weakened.
Stress related to captivity, transport or reproduction increases sensitivity. A humid, poorly ventilated environment or with moldy litter strongly favors the proliferation of the fungus. Young birds, sick, injured or immunocompromised individuals are more vulnerable. An unbalanced diet or a vitamin A deficiency can also weaken the respiratory mucous membranes.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on the history of the bird, the clinical examination and additional tests: x-rays or endoscopy to visualize the air sacs and lungs, blood tests, and sometimes direct search for the fungus by sampling or culture. Diagnosis can be difficult because the signs are sometimes discreet, especially in chronic forms.
Treatment
Treatment is based on antifungal medications prescribed and adapted by the veterinarian, combined with supportive care to help the bird recover: rehydration, nutritional support and stress reduction. The treatment time is often long. Improving the environment is essential alongside medical treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based above all on environmental hygiene: clean and dry litter, good ventilation of aviaries, rapid elimination of any moldy hay or straw, humidity management. It is recommended to limit sources of stress, particularly during sensitive periods such as reproduction or transport. A suitable and balanced diet helps maintain good immune defenses. In conservation programs, regular veterinary monitoring of bald ibis populations allows for early detection.
Possible complications
If left untreated, the infection can spread widely into the air sacs and lungs, leading to severe respiratory failure. Neurological damage or spread to other organs is possible in advanced forms. The acute form can progress very quickly to death.
