Termite microsporidiosis is a discreet parasitic disease caused by microsporidia, which are single-celled organisms that live obligately inside the cells of their host. These parasites settle mainly in the termite's intestine or adipose (fatty) tissue, disrupting its internal function.

This condition is primarily studied in a scientific context, particularly to better understand the natural mechanisms that regulate termite populations, including certain species considered harmful to buildings and timber.

Unlike diseases of domestic animals, termite microsporidiosis affects a social species living in colonies; its impact is therefore measured at both the individual and group level.

Observable signs remain discrete and nonspecific. An infected termite may show slowed movement, reduced activity levels (less participation in colony tasks), and general weakness. As the infection progresses, progressive mortality of affected individuals may be observed. There is no characteristic visible sign allowing recognition of the disease to the naked eye; only laboratory analysis confirms the diagnosis.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by microsporidia, single-celled organisms related to fungi and obligate intracellular parasites. They invade cells in the termite's intestine, fatty tissue, or other internal organs. Spores, which are highly resistant in the environment, are the infective form: they are ingested by termites during mutual grooming, food sharing, or contact with contaminated material in the colony.

Colonies weakened by stress, food shortage, unfavorable humidity or temperature conditions, or high population density appear more susceptible to disease spread. The social lifestyle of termites, with constant close contact between individuals (grooming, food sharing), promotes rapid transmission of spores within a colony once infection is introduced.

Transmission

Transmission occurs mainly via the oral-fecal route within the colony: ingestion of spores present in fecal matter, on the body of an infected nestmate (during frequent mutual grooming in termites), or in shared food (trophallaxis). Spores can also persist in the substrate (wood, soil) and be ingested during feeding or nest construction.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

Veterinary diagnosis is not applicable in the classical sense for termite colonies: the condition mainly affects termites bred in the laboratory or observed as part of entomological studies. A specialist (entomologist, biologist) confirms the presence of microsporidia through microscopic examination of a smear from the intestine or fatty tissue of sick or dead termites, revealing characteristic spores. Molecular biology techniques (PCR) can confirm the species of microsporidia involved. There is no field 'veterinary' consultation as there is for domestic animals; evaluation is carried out by specialized laboratories in invertebrate pathology.

Treatment

There is no validated specific antiparasitic treatment applicable at the scale of a termite colony for this condition. Management is limited, in an experimental setting, to isolation of infected individuals or groups to limit spread. No self-treatment or field treatment is recommended for the general public.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

In the context of experimental termite breeding, prevention involves good equipment hygiene, isolation of diseased colonies, and avoiding introduction of termites or substrates (wood, soil) of uncertain origin. For wild colonies or infested structures, there is no specific prevention measure within reach of the general public; management of termite pests is the responsibility of building pest control professionals.

Possible complications

In an already weakened termite, microsporidian infection facilitates the establishment of other pathogens (bacteria, opportunistic fungi), worsening the decline of the individual. At the colony level, widespread contamination can reduce the population of active workers, disrupt building tasks, brood feeding and defense, and durably weaken the social structure of the nest.

Observation of unusual and progressive mortality within a termite colony bred in the laboratory or in an insectarium.

Marked slowing of the colony's overall activity without obvious environmental cause.

Prognosis

The prognosis varies depending on parasite load, the microsporidian species, and the general condition of the colony. A light infection may go unnoticed and not significantly affect the colony. A heavy infection can lead to progressive weakening of affected individuals and, ultimately, contribute to population decline if numerous workers are affected.
