Mucormycosis is a rare but serious opportunistic fungal infection caused by fungi in the Mucorales group that naturally occur in soil and decaying vegetation. In the echidna, a spiny monotreme mammal native to Australia and New Guinea, this disease mainly affects weakened, stressed, or immunocompromised animals, particularly those in captivity or following an injury. The infection causes skin lesions or deeper involvement that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

The most common signs are skin lesions: crusts, non-healing wounds, swelling or nodules beneath the skin, sometimes with discharge. When the infection involves the respiratory tract, difficulty breathing or nasal discharge may be observed. The animal typically becomes depressed, loses appetite, and may gradually lose weight. Since echidnas tend to hide or isolate themselves when ill, the first signs can easily go unnoticed.

Causes and risk factors
Mucormycosis is caused by ubiquitous filamentous fungi from the environment (soil, decaying organic matter, damp bedding) belonging to the order Mucorales (genera Mucor, Rhizopus, Absidia, Rhizomucor). These fungi are normally not very aggressive but become pathogenic when the echidna's immune defenses are weakened. Infection most often occurs through a skin wound, scratch, tick or insect bite, or by inhalation of spores in a damp and poorly maintained environment.
Echidnas at highest risk are those weakened by another illness, injured, stressed by captivity or transport, or living in a damp and unhygienic environment. An immune system already under stress (young animals, elderly animals, convalescence) increases vulnerability to these opportunistic fungi.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Diagnosis is challenging in echidnas because signs are often subtle at first, as the animal may hide its illness by withdrawing into itself. The exotic animal veterinarian suspects mucormycosis when faced with skin or nasal lesions that do not heal despite standard treatment, particularly in a weakened animal or one recently exposed to stress (transport, captivity, injury). Confirmation requires samples (tissue biopsy, swab) sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination and fungal culture, allowing identification of the fungi responsible (Mucor, Rhizopus, Absidia genera in particular). Imaging (radiography, CT scan if available) may be useful if deep involvement (sinuses, lungs) is suspected. Prognosis depends greatly on how quickly treatment is started.
Treatment
Management typically combines systemic antifungal treatment prescribed and adjusted by the veterinarian, local care of skin lesions (cleaning, surgical debridement of affected tissue if necessary), and general support for the animal (rehydration, appropriate nutrition, stress reduction). How quickly treatment is started is decisive for the outcome.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention depends first and foremost on good hygiene of the echidna's environment, especially in captivity or in a care facility: bedding and substrate should be kept dry and changed regularly, and accumulation of damp organic material should be avoided. Any wound, scratch, or injury should be cleaned and monitored immediately. Limiting stress sources (excessive handling, transport, unsuitable housing) helps protect the animal's immune defences. There is no vaccine against this fungal disease.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread deeper, reach subcutaneous tissues, airways or other organs, and progress to generalised infection. Widespread involvement greatly reduces the animal's chances of survival.

Prognosis
The prognosis is guarded to poor if the infection is deep or if diagnosis is delayed, as the disease can progress rapidly in an already weakened animal. It is more favourable when the infection remains confined to the skin and is treated early by a veterinarian experienced with exotic species.
Frequently asked questions
Can mucormycosis in echidnas be transmitted to humans or other animals?
The risk is very low. Mucorales are environmental fungi and not agents that are transmitted directly from one animal to another. A severely immunocompromised person could theoretically be susceptible to the same type of fungus present in the environment, but contact with a sick echidna is not considered a significant mode of transmission.
Can a wild echidna catch this disease?
It's possible but rare. Documented cases primarily involve animals in captivity, in care or rescue facilities, often following injury, significant stress, or weakening linked to another cause.
How to prevent this disease in a hedgehog in care or in captivity?
Rigorous enclosure hygiene, dry bedding changed regularly, prompt disinfection of any wound, and stress management of the animal significantly reduce the risk.
Does this disease heal completely?
If detected early and actively treated, recovery is possible. Conversely, a late diagnosis, especially in cases of deep involvement, greatly reduces the chances of survival.
