Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is a common condition in echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), small insectivorous spiky mammals native to Australia and New Guinea. These parasites live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense, causing gradual deterioration of its overall condition. Both in captivity and in the wild, a high parasite burden can seriously weaken the animal, especially if it is young, elderly, or already compromised by another health problem.

Signs are often subtle at first. Progressive weight loss may be seen despite maintained or variable appetite, soft or diarrheal stools, and sometimes a distended abdomen. The echidna may become more lethargic than usual, less active at night, and its coat of hair between the spines may appear dull. In advanced cases, dehydration, pale mucous membranes (visible around the mouth), and marked weakness may appear, particularly in young individuals.

Causes and risk factors
Several species of intestinal nematodes can colonize the echidna's digestive tract. Eggs from these worms are shed in the feces of the parasitized animal and contaminate the environment (soil, bedding, water sources). Other echidnas or the individual itself can become reinfected by ingesting eggs or larvae present on the ground, in ants and termites consumed, or through licking.
Young echidnas, stressed animals (transport, recent captivity, environmental changes), and those weakened by concurrent illness are more vulnerable to severe infestation.
High animal density in the same space, poor enclosure hygiene, low-quality diet, or limited access to varied food sources promote parasite accumulation.
Echidnas kept in wildlife rehabilitation centers, animal parks, or undergoing care after wild capture receive particular monitoring, as captivity stress can worsen an infestation already present in the wild state.
Transmission
Indirect transmission through ingestion of eggs or larvae present in the environment contaminated by feces from a parasitized animal (soil, bedding, soiled food).
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
A veterinarian specializing in exotic animals performs fecal analysis (coprology) to search for parasite eggs under the microscope. Multiple samples may be necessary because egg shedding is sometimes irregular.
Blood work may be requested to assess the overall impact of infestation, particularly if anemia or dehydration is suspected.
In some cases, endoscopy or other diagnostic tests may be considered if symptoms persist despite appropriate treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is based on administering antiparasitic agents (dewormers) suited to the species, under strict veterinary supervision, as echidnas have physiological characteristics that make some products poorly tolerated.
Supportive care may be combined with treatment in cases of dehydration or weakness: fluid therapy and nutritional supplementation.
Follow-up usually includes fecal examination after treatment to verify the protocol's effectiveness.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular enclosure cleaning, prompt removal of droppings, and management of substrate moisture limit the survival of eggs and larvae in the environment.
Regular fecal screening, particularly when a new animal arrives or after wild capture, enables early detection.
Appropriate diet and a low-stress environment strengthen the echidna's natural resistance to parasites.
Possible complications
Massive untreated infestation can lead to anemia, severe weight loss, significant dehydration, and in the most fragile individuals, life-threatening complications.
Parasites can also promote secondary infections by weakening the intestinal wall.

Can a healthy echidna carry worms without being sick?
Yes, a low parasitic load is often well tolerated and does not always cause visible symptoms. It is mainly when the parasitic load increases, or when the animal is weakened, that clinical signs appear.
How do you know if an echidna has intestinal worms?
The only reliable method is a stool analysis performed by a veterinarian. Visible symptoms, such as weight loss, are not specific and may have other causes.
Can this parasitism be transmitted to humans or other animals?
Intestinal nematodes of echidnas are generally specific to this species or closely related species. Significant transmission to humans is not documented.
Should a captive echidna be systematically dewormed?
The decision must be made by a veterinary specialist, based on the results of faecal analysis. Systematic treatment without diagnosis is not recommended.
