It is a disease that is still poorly documented in this particular species, with most knowledge extrapolated from other aquatic and marine reptiles.

We most often observe irregular spots or plaques on the skin, sometimes whitish, grayish or brownish depending on the fungus in question. \nThe affected area may become thicker, rougher or, on the contrary, ulcerate and form a wound that does not heal normally. \nThe animal may rub against rocks or pool decor, appear hampered in its movements, swim in an unusual way or lose its appetite if the infection becomes severe. \nIn advanced cases, localized swelling or a particular odor may appear around the lesions.

Causes and risk factors
These mycoses are caused by so-called opportunistic fungi, that is to say fungi normally present in the marine environment which take advantage of a weakness in the skin to take hold. \nThe genera involved in aquatic reptiles often belong to groups close to those found in sea turtles and fish, but precise identification in sea snakes remains rare and requires specialized sampling.
Poor water quality, a pre-existing skin injury, prolonged stress or unsuitable water temperature weaken the skin barrier and encourage the establishment of the fungus. \nA weakened immune system, for example after illness, transport or recent captivity, also increases the risk. \nPromiscuity with other sick animals or soiled substrate may also play a role.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian specializing in exotic animals examines the appearance of the skin lesions and questions the animal's living conditions. \nSkin samples (scraping, biopsy) can be sent to the laboratory to identify the fungus in question and eliminate other possible causes such as a bacterial or parasitic infection. \nAn analysis of the pond water is often recommended in parallel to look for a contributing factor.
Treatment
Treatment is based on appropriate antifungals, applied locally to the skin or sometimes administered systemically depending on the severity and extent of the lesions. \nImproving water conditions and reducing stress are an integral part of treatment. \nWound care may be necessary if significant ulceration occurs.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Maintaining clean, well-filtered water at a stable temperature appropriate for the species is the most important measure in captivity. \nAvoiding skin injuries, limiting stress and regularly monitoring the appearance of the skin allows early detection. \nA quarantine of new animals and regular disinfection of equipment and the pool also reduce the risk of contamination.
Possible complications
Without treatment, the infection can spread deep and affect the subcutaneous tissues, or even lead to generalized infection in a weakened animal. \nAbnormal healing of the skin can also leave aesthetic or functional after-effects.
