It affects all felids, including wild cats such as the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa). This virus primarily targets cells that divide rapidly: those in the bone marrow (which produce white blood cells) and those in the intestines.
In wild felids housed in captivity (zoos, conservation centers), the disease is feared because the clouded leopard is a threatened species, and every individual matters for conservation programs. Young animals are the most vulnerable.

High fever is seen, along with marked letharness, complete loss of appetite, and repeated vomiting.
Diarrhea follows, sometimes tinged with blood. The animal dehydrates rapidly, loses weight, and becomes very weak.
In very young animals, the disease can progress within just a few days to a critical state. In some cases, the progression is so rapid that the animal is found dead with no clearly visible preceding signs.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by feline parvovirus (FPV), a non-enveloped virus that is extremely resistant in the environment.
It destroys rapidly dividing cells, particularly those in the bone marrow (resulting in a severe drop in white blood cells, called "panleukopenia") and those in the intestinal wall (causing digestive problems).
Young animals that are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated face the highest risk. Stress from captivity, contact with stray domestic cats around facilities, and poorly disinfected equipment or enclosures increase the risk of infection. Inadequate maternal immunity in young animals also plays a role. Close confinement in wildlife conservation centers or zoos can rapidly spread the virus if a case emerges.
Transmission
The virus spreads through direct contact with secretions, vomit, or feces from infected animals, but also indirectly through contaminated materials, hands, shoes, or enclosures.
It can also pass from mother to offspring during pregnancy.
This virus is particularly resistant in the environment; it can survive for long periods, which facilitates its spread among felids, including between domestic cats and wild felids sharing the same space.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical signs, vaccination history, and contact with other cats. Blood tests reveal the characteristic drop in white blood cells. Specific virus detection tests in feces can confirm diagnosis. Abdominal ultrasound may help assess the condition of the intestines.
Treatment
No specific antiviral treatment exists. Management relies on intensive supportive care: fluid replacement, correction of electrolyte imbalances, anti-nausea medication, digestive protectants, and antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections that arise from the drop in white blood cells. Nutritional support is often necessary. Care must be prompt and intensive, ideally at a facility specializing in wild animal medicine.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Vaccination is the cornerstone of prevention, with protocols tailored to wild cats by veterinarians specializing in exotic wildlife. Strict quarantine for any new animal, limiting contact with domestic or stray cats around facilities, and thorough disinfection of equipment and enclosures with disinfectants effective against non-enveloped viruses are essential. Following biosecurity protocols in zoos is fundamental to protecting this threatened species.
Vaccination
Vaccines are available and adapted by veterinarians specializing in wildlife, taking into account the immune system characteristics of non-domestic cats. The vaccination protocol must be tailored case by case depending on age, immune status, and housing conditions.
Possible complications
Complications include severe dehydration, shock, widespread secondary bacterial infections (septicemia) favored by the collapse of immune defenses, and sometimes neurological disturbances if infection occurs in very young animals.
Death can occur rapidly without prompt treatment.
