Gastrointestinal parasitism caused by roundworms (nematodes) is very common in clouded leopards, both in the wild and in captivity in zoos. These worms, especially ascarids (Toxascaris, Toxocara) and hookworms, live in the animal's intestines and feed at its expense. Young individuals are particularly vulnerable because their immune system is still immature.
This parasitic infection is generally well managed when detected early, but it can become serious in kittens or weakened animals, leading to stunted growth or anaemia.

The most common signs are diarrhoea sometimes tinged with mucus, occasional vomiting, a dull and lacklustre coat, and progressive weight loss despite sometimes retained appetite.
In young clouded leopards, a swollen belly (distended), stunted growth compared to littermates, and general lethargy may be observed.
In some cases, adult worms may be visible directly in faeces or vomit, which is a fairly characteristic sign.
A heavy and prolonged infestation can lead to anaemia, recognizable by pale mucous membranes (gums, inside of the mouth).

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by intestinal nematodes, mainly ascarids (roundworms of the genus Toxocara or Toxascaris) and sometimes hookworms (Ancylostoma). These parasites colonize the small intestine and feed on digestive contents or, for some, directly on the host's blood.
Young animals (cubs) face the highest risk due to their still-developing immunity. Captive living conditions with insufficient hygiene, repeated contact with contaminated fecal matter, uncontrolled raw meat diets, and shared environments with infested felids increase risk significantly. Stress and immunosuppression favor parasite establishment and multiplication.
Transmission
Transmission occurs mainly through ingestion of parasite eggs present in contaminated environment (soil, bedding, prey). Kittens can also be infested directly by their mother, via milk (transmammary transmission) or before birth (transplacental transmission) for certain ascarids. Eating parasitized prey or raw meat is another important route, particularly in captivity if diet is not properly controlled.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
Your veterinarian makes the diagnosis through fecal examination (coproscopy) to identify parasite eggs under a microscope. A complete clinical examination and sometimes blood work (to assess potential anemia) complete the assessment. Precise identification of the worm type guides treatment selection.
Treatment
Treatment involves administering broad-spectrum antiparasitic agents (dewormers) under strict veterinary supervision, given the species-specific requirements and the animal's weight. Nutritional support and, if needed, rehydration may accompany treatment in cases of marked weakness.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention relies on regular deworming tailored to the species and performed under veterinary supervision, especially in young animals. Frequent cleaning of enclosures and litter areas, prompt fecal removal, and proper food source management (controlled meat, frozen when necessary to kill certain parasites) greatly reduce risk. Regular fecal screening allows detection of infestation before severe symptoms develop.
Possible complications
Severe untreated infestation can cause severe anemia, dehydration, significant growth delay in young animals, or even intestinal obstruction in extreme cases from worm accumulation. In severely weakened animals, the outcome can be fatal, particularly in very young individuals.

Transmission to humans

The risk mainly concerns animal care staff with close contact to feces, highlighting the importance of strict hygiene practices (hand washing, wearing gloves).
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good if the parasitism is detected and treated early. It becomes more guarded in heavily infested kittens or when complications occur, such as severe anemia or significant dehydration.
